May River Bluff
“Holey Hickory”
High on a bluff overlooking the May River a young hickory tree died suddenly. It was riddled with shot-holes from a beetle infestation. Knowing that the Asian Long-Horned Beetle had been found in the not so far away town of Hollywood, SC, local arborists notified the Clemson University invasive insect lab. Thankfully, matches of the exit hole diameters and larva confirmed that this was NOT the dreaded ALB.
The Holey Hickory Collection is made up of bowls created from this tree. The sepia tones of these pieces is happenstantial to the insect’s feeding activity.
